Neurofibromatosis & Its Genetic Implications Essays -

Neurofibromatosis and Its Genetic Implications The National Institute of Health characterizes Neurofibromatoses as gathering hereditary disarranges that influences the turn of events and development of neural cell tissues. These clutters cause tumor development in nerve tissues, skin changes, and now and again bone deformations. Of the eight potential subtypes of Neurofibromatosis (NF) at any rate 85% are spoken to by NF Type 1, otherwise called von Recklinghausen or great fringe neurofibromatosis. It has a commonness of about 1:4000 live births. An extra 10% have NF Type 2, otherwise called acoustic or focal neurofibromatosis and happens in about 1:50,000 live births (Baskin 1). This paper will manage the more predominant NF Type 1 and spotlight on the indications of the sickness and biochemical parts of the NF1 and the moral ramifications of acquired hereditary issue. NF1 is an autosomal predominant acquired ailment described by different caf?- au-lait recognizes, various fibromas, and Lisch knobs. Most indications show up during youth and early grown-up life. Clinical models for diagnosing the ailment must incorporate at least two of the accompanying indications: (1) six or more caf?- au-lait spots bigger that 5 mm in pre-pubescent people and more noteworthy than 15 mm is post-pubescent people, (2) two or more neurofibromas of any sort or one plexiform neurofibroma, (3) axillary or inguinal freckling, (4) sphenoid bone dysplasia, (5) optic glioma, (6) Lisch knobs, and (7) a family ancestry of NF1. Different indications incorporate learning incapacities, epilepsy, mental hindrance, scoliosis, gastrointestinal neurofibromas, pheochromacytomas, and renal vein stenosis (Goldman 2074). Caf?- au-lait spots are pigmented macules of monster melanin granules found in the basal layer of the epidermis and are recognized by the nearness of more DOPA-positive melanocytes than encompassing skin and a smooth fringe and light earthy colored shade of the macules. Neurofibromas are hamartomatous, a mass of disarranged tissue indigenous to a specific site (Robbins 134), that are made for the most part out of Schwann cells, yet additionally contain fibroblasts, pole cells and macrophages. Plexiform neurofibromatoas, enormous, multilobe pendulous masses, are all the more profoundly arranged in huge nerves, as a rule include the appendages, and are related with hypertrophy of basic delicate tissues and bones. Lisch knobs, or iris harmartomas, are the most well-known sign of NF1. They are vault molded, raised, avascular, melanocytic knobs of the iris with a smooth shape and some translucency (Baskin 1-3). Neurofibromatosis Type I is an autosomal predominant issue without preference for sex, race, or shading. It appears with complete penetrance with profoundly factor articulation. The quality is situated on chromosome 17q and the quality envelops around 350 kilobases (Goldman 2074). The quality codes for the protein neurofibromine which looks like certain proteins that inactivate oncogenes (Hulsebos 620); along these lines lacking neurofibromine can prompt an expanded mien to disease. In spite of the fact that the confusion is acquired, the unconstrained transformation rate is somewhere in the range of 2.4 and 4.3 x 10-5 (ncbl.nlm.nih.gov). A dominating fatherly induction recommends that the first transformation happens in the mitotic divisions that occur during male gametogenesis yet not during female gametogenesis. The NF1 quality can show a twelve kilobase erasure including exons thirty-two through thirty-nine sometimes or an increasingly extreme cancellation including a 100 kilobase cancellation from exon four close to the five prime finish of the quality to intron thirty-nine close to the three prime finish of the quality (nclb.nlm.nih.gov). There doesn't seem, by all accounts, to be any relationship between's specific genotypes and phenotypes (Goldman 2074). The succession of the NF1 quality predicts 2,485 amino acids in the NF1 peptide. The peptide demonstrates some comparability to human GTPase enacting protein (GAP). This finding proposes that NF1 codes for a cytoplasmic GAP-like protein that interfaces with proteins like the RAS quality item in the control of cell development in. shows that the tumor smothering action of the NF1 protein adversely directs p21 (RAS) and shows a ?positive? development job for RAS movement in NF1 tumors. The NF1 quality item neurofibromine contains a GTPase enacting protein known as NF1 GRD that downregulates RAS by animating inborn GTPase. Since RAS and GTP are significant controller atoms in cell development and separation, freak neurofibromines coming about because of substantial transformations in the NF1 quality may meddle with the RAS flagging pathway and hence add to the advancement of tumors (ncbl.nlm.nih.gov). The likelihood of transmission of NF1 is half with every pregnancy,

Employer †Employee Relationship Essay Example for Free

Business †Employee Relationship Essay Little Lamb Company needs an extra software engineer for an uncommon undertaking. The organization goes into an agreement with Mary to finish this task. Similarly as the venture is approaching consummation, at first a self employed entity as she had a high level of command over how the work is practiced, and goes into an agreement with the organization another need emerges for her administrations. She is approached to proceed with the organization to finish the new venture. While finishing the new undertaking, the boss starts working all the more intimately with Mary and expects her to utilize organization materials and gear while clinging to organization work plans. Mary is by all accounts pushing toward a freely worker position, since she seems to have less command over how the work is practiced as she will most likely need to reply to the administrator, and utilizing the organizations materials and hardware and clinging to the organization work plans. Following two years recommends freely representative on account of the period of time being 2 years, financial conditions power the organization to make spending cuts. Mary is approached to leave as a worker, as she is clearly done filling in as a self employed entity, when requested to leave the organization. After thirty days, a significant agreement is procured by the organization, which reestablishes the requirement for Marys benefits as a software engineer. Notwithstanding, the chief decides to recruit his similarly qualified cousin and not offer Mary the chance to return. The utilization of word recruit suggested that Mary had been a representative and not a self employed entity. Is Mary a self employed entity or a representative? Depict the elements that prompted your assurance. There are a few standards to decide whether Mary is a temporary worker or a representative. For instance, one basic angle to recognize a self employed entity from a worker is the level of power over how the work is cultivated. At first Mary appeared to have more control than she did toward the end, so it appears that she moved from being a self employed entity toward the starting to a representative after some time. Be that as it may, there are numerous variables to consider in making an assurance with regards to whether a laborer is a self employed entity or a worker. A portion of these measures include:†¢Whether an unmistakable occupation or business isâ being performed; for example developer, so at first Mary was contracted as a self employed entity for a particular task. †¢The measure of oversight over the methods by which the work is performed; for example the boss starts working all the more intimately with Mary and expects her to utilize organization materials and hardware while holding fast to organization work plans suggests a move away from self employed entity towards a voluntarily worker. †¢The level of aptitude required to play out the work; e.g., software engineer similarly qualified cousin†¢Who gives the apparatuses used to play out the work, and, e.g., expects her to utilize organization materials and hardware while holding fast to organization work plans and in this way moving towards being a voluntarily employee†¢The place where the work is done; for example Mary is working in the workplace, the manager starts working all the more intimately with Mary and expects her to utilize organization materials and gear while clinging to organization work plans proposing a freely worker position. Has the business/worker relationship changed through the span of time? Assuming this is the case, how?As referenced above, it seemed to change after some time. It appears that at first, Mary could be viewed as a self employed entity since Little Lamb Company needs an extra software engineer for an extraordinary undertaking and Mary went into an agreement with the organization. Notwithstanding, Mary was later approached to remain on and started working near the director, who anticipated that Mary should utilized the organization materials and gear, to follow the organization work plan, and was ended voluntarily when financial conditions requested. In this manner, Mary appeared to move from a self employed entity to a voluntarily worker. 3) Was Marys discharge legitimate under the regulation of work voluntarily? Why or why not? This is dinky water and it depends. In the event that Mary had moved into a voluntarily representative, at that point the convention of work freely permits her worker to release her without reason (be that as it may, they at first had an agreement, which we take a gander at in the following piece of this inquiry beneath). In the situation, it says Mary goes into an agreement for the main undertaking, be that as it may, makes noâ mention of an agreement when she is approached to remain on (nonetheless, in some cases contracts are inferred). For instance, in many conditions of the United States all workers are considered voluntarily representatives. That implies that the business can fire or change the work relationship freely, except if there is an agreement with the business. As a rule, a business can terminate a freely representative, or change the workers position or remuneration with no not ification and no explanation. In like manner, the worker can fire his work voluntarily without notice or reason. Be that as it may, there are three potential legitimated reasons representative can challenge an illegitimate termination:If not, which of the accompanying exemptions to business voluntarily have been damaged? Why?a) Breach of open approach (Perhaps) Values, standards and fundamental guidelines that the courts and councils consider to be to the greatest advantage of people and the overall population. Boss infringement of explicit work and business laws may be called infringement of open strategy, rather than or notwithstanding infringement of the particular laws. That is on the grounds that it is to the greatest advantage of all laborers that all businesses comply with such laws. Open approach might be composed or suggested, and shifts among states and districts. Thus, regardless of whether a business has damaged open strategy is frequently a matter of understanding by a court or authority (i.e., recru ited cousin as opposed to having Mary return). b) Breach of suggested pledge of sincere trust and reasonable managing. Most likely not, on the grounds that it is managing contracts and the inquiry is managing voluntarily special cases. c) Breach of suggested contract (this is a chance). Why? For instance, in an agreement between the business and the worker, even without a formal composed business understanding. For instance, language in a representative handbook may guarantee all cutbacks depend on status or we give workers in any event fourteen days notice all things considered. In this manner, if Mary diminishes she is improperly fired, as a worker; she can challenge an unjust end for these authentic reasons

Loose Grip

Loose Grip Every time we let go, we build on the momentum we’ve gained from years of jettisoning, decluttering, purging. At first, the act of eliminating feels difficultâ€"everything seems so precious. Then you realize: if something is too precious, you’re probably holding onto it too tightly. If you loosen your grip, letting go leaves fewer claw marks. In time, getting rid of a few unworn teeshirts leads to half a closet, a dusty letter opener leads to a clutter-free workspace, an outdated phone charger leads to junkless junk drawers. Letting go is a beautiful cycle: the more action you take, the more you want to take action. And it all starts with less sentimentality, fewer expectations, and a loose grip. The Is Not Our Type - 943 Words

On Monday, September 14, my partner and I set out to find someone that was â€Å"Not our Type†. When I first heard about the assignment I was extremely nervous for what would lie ahead. I’m not a very talkative person and hardly ever just have random conversations with people that I don’t know. I knew that this assignment would certainly get me out of my comfort zone, and cause me to really branch out. A huge part of talking to others about Christ is to just start up a simple conversation to work off of. It can become even more difficult when someone has a different background or separate moral values. I was by no means looking forward to the awkwardness that would possibly lie ahead, we decided that the best place to start would be Walmart since people are there 24/7. We walked in at around 9 p.m. and started our search. After about 20 minutes we finally decided to make our move on someone. We walked up to a young man that looked to be in high school and began o ur conversation. We started off by just introducing ourselves and telling him that we were working on an assignment and just wanted to get to know him a little bit better. The conversation actually flowed really well and we had a lot in common like our love for sports and technology. His name is Dilan Patel and he’s a junior at Siloam High. Amy Tan †Mother Tongue Free Essays

English 101 Mother Tongue Amy Tan makes a valid point about the use of different Englishes that are spoken in different places and to certain people. What one says may sometimes vary based on the person, situation, or event as well. How one speaks and what they pick up on happens in the home and other people see them differently based on the way they speak. We will write a custom essay sample on Amy Tan – Mother Tongue or any similar topic only for you Order Now Different languages become difficult to translate as well because there isn’t always a similar word in the translating language. Many people can relate to this story in the aspect that everyone has their own way of speaking and others’ make them feel inferior with their speech. Some people may have difficulty saying certain words and those who speak well may downsize the verbally handicapped. This is a great essay that relates well to this day and time. Tan relates to her own experiences to compare how people think and to how society sees them. She believed her mother to be illiterate because she spoke improper or broken English and other people looked down on her for it. She was laughed at and often times not taken seriously because, being an immigrant with a strong Asian background, her English wasn’t as proper as others. Amy Tan grew up taking calls for her mother and impersonating her on the phone so her mother did not sound so illiterate while trying to communicate with superiors or people who owed her money. This strategy was soon found out however, when Mrs. Tan had to speak to these people in person. Amy believed, â€Å"her [mother’s] English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is, because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect†¦ People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretend not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. (142) Society has the need to be perfect and if someone speaks imperfectly, then they are often treated unfairly. Languages spoken in the home and often picked up at school threw peers. The house is the base for learning. Amy Tan came from an immigrant family where no one knew how to speak proper English. This in turn, made it hard to learn the correct way of speaking especially when learning. The first step of speaking the proper way is to recognize how everyone else speaks as well as the way they react to what is said to them. Once someone recognizes that there is a difference in the way they speak, in comparison to the rest of society, and how they are treated, they become aware of how they can change their English. They must first start by paying attention to people around them; how they act and react to the way things are said to them. Different englishes vary based on environments’. When someone is at work, they have a particular way in which they talk to different people; consumers, superiors, and fellow co-workers. While changing to a different situation; at home, one would probably not talk to their parents the same way that they would ague with a sibling. School seems to be the safe place to speak one’s mind, with their peers of course. Speaking to teachers would also differ from being with friends or speaking with strangers. Englishes vary based on group or environment because the people who are being spoken to need to be able to fully understand what is spoken. Amy and her mother experienced this as well. She states, â€Å"Some of my friends tell me they understand 50 percent of what my mother says. Some say they understand 80 to 90 percent. Some say they understand none of it, as if she were speaking Chinese. But to me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It’s my mother’s tongue. † (141) Growing up with her mother, Amy became accustomed to the way her mother spoke, everyone interprets a languages differently based on their own perspective. Amy Tan believes that with growing up in an immigrant household and her mother being her role model, speaking broken English in the home negatively impacted her academically. I think my mother’s English almost had an effect on limiting my possibilities in life as well. I do think that the language spoken in the family plays a large role in shaping the language of the child† (143) Tan claims that her I. Q. and S. A. T scores where hindered by improper English in the household. What Amy states makes sense in the aspect that everyone learns to speak the language they where raised wit h. Peers influence your speech, but your home life defines it. When you hear a language all your life, it becomes the way you speak as well. When one grows up with a language, they don’t think to question it. Need of improvement does not even become an idea until you connect that the way you speak reflects the way you speak to a point. The use of different Englishes is so natural that few people are aware of any change in our language, but it has become so natural for people to alter their speech in a way that is comfortable for everyone and so that it can be better understood. Our vocabulary and ideas change to better suit any given environment and differs for all groups of people as well; peers, family, superiors, and clients. The environment one grows up in begins shaping the language of each individual in the household. It becomes second nature and many people do not become aware of differences in speech until a later age. Speaking differently from other people can be a rough challenge and no one deserves to feel inferior because they are different. Some people may have difficulty saying certain words and those who speak well may degrade these people which should not be socially accepted. This is an easy essay to relate to when you can observe the way others interact with each other. How to cite Amy Tan – Mother Tongue, Papers

Fast Facts: Henry Knox Known For: Knox helped lead the Continental Army during the American Revolution and later served as the U.S. Secretary of War.Born: July 25, 1750 in Boston, British AmericaParents: William and Mary KnoxDied: October 25, 1806 in Thomaston, MassachusettsEducation: Boston Latin SchoolSpouse: Lucy Flucker (m. 1774–1806)Children: 13 Early Life Knox apprenticed himself to a local bookbinder named Nicholas Bowes, who helped Knox learn the trade and encouraged his reading. Bowes permitted Knox to liberally borrow from the stores inventory, and in this manner Knox became proficient in French and effectively completed his education on his own. He remained an avid reader, eventually opening his own shop, the London Book Store, at the age of 21. Knox was especially fascinated by military topics, including artillery, and he read widely on the subject. March 5th, 1770: British soldiers open fire on a crowd of Bostonians, killing five people, in what became known as the Boston massacre. Hulton Archive  / Stringer/  Getty Images The Revolution Nears A supporter of American colonial rights, Knox became involved in the Sons of Liberty and was present at the Boston Massacre in 1770. He later swore in an  affidavit that he had attempted to calm tensions that night by requesting that the British soldiers return to their quarters. Knox also testified at the trials of those involved in the incident. Two years later, he put his military studies to use by founding a militia unit called the Boston Grenadier Corps. Though he knew much about weaponry, Knox accidentally shot two fingers from his left hand while handling a shotgun in 1773. Marriage On June 16, 1774, Knox married Lucy Flucker, the daughter of the Royal Secretary of the Province of Massachusetts. The marriage was opposed by her parents, who disapproved of Knoxs revolutionary politics and attempted to entice him into joining the British Army. Knox remained a staunch patriot. Following the outbreak of the American Revolution,  he volunteered to serve with colonial forces and participated in the  Battle of Bunker Hill  on June 17, 1775. His in-laws  fled the city after it fell to American forces in 1776. Fort Ticonderoga, New York.   Purestock/Getty Images Guns of Ticonderoga Knox served with Massachusetts forces in the states Army of Observation during the opening days of the Siege of Boston. He soon came to the attention of army commander General George Washington, who was  inspecting fortifications designed by Knox near Roxbury. Washington was impressed, and the two men developed a friendly relationship. As the army desperately needed artillery, the commanding general consulted Knox for advice in November 1775. Knox proposed a plan to transport the cannon captured at Fort Ticonderoga  in New York to the siege lines around Boston. Washington was on board with the plan. After making Knox a colonel in the Continental Army, the general immediately sent him north, as winter was rapidly approaching. At Ticonderoga, Knox initially had difficulty acquiring sufficient men in the lightly populated Berkshire Mountains.  He finally assembled what he dubbed the noble train of artillery. Knox began moving 59 guns and mortars down Lake George and the Hudson River to Albany. It was a difficult trek, and several guns fell through the ice and had to be recovered. In Albany, the guns were transferred to ox-drawn sleds and pulled across Massachusetts. The 300-mile journey took Knox and his men 56 days to complete in the bitter winter weather. In Boston, Washington ordered the guns to be placed atop Dorchester Heights, overlooking the city and harbor. Rather than face bombardment, the British forces, led by General Sir William Howe, evacuated the city on March 17, 1776. New York and Philadelphia Campaigns Following the victory at Boston, Knox was sent to oversee the construction of fortifications in  Rhode Island and Connecticut. When he returned to the Continental Army, he became Washingtons chief of artillery. After the American defeats in New York that fall, Knox retreated across New Jersey with the remaining troops. As Washington devised his daring Christmas attack on Trenton, Knox was given the key role of overseeing the armys crossing of the Delaware River. With the assistance of Colonel John Glover, Knox succeeded in moving the attack force across the river in a timely fashion. He also directed the American withdrawal on December 26. For his service at Trenton, Knox was promoted to brigadier general. In early January, he saw further action at Assunpink Creek and Princeton before the army moved to winter quarters at Morristown, New Jersey. Taking advantage of this break from campaigning, Knox returned to Massachusetts with the goal of improving weapons production. He traveled to Springfield and established the Springfield Armory, which operated for the rest of the war and became a key producer of American weapons for almost two centuries. After he rejoined the army, Knox took part in the American defeats at Brandywine (September 11, 1777) and Germantown (October 4, 1777). At the latter, he made the ill-fated suggestion to Washington that they should capture the British-occupied home of Germantown resident Benjamin Chew, rather than bypass it. The delay gave the British badly needed time to re-establish their lines, and this contributed to the American loss. Valley Forge to Yorktown During the winter at Valley Forge, Knox helped secure needed supplies and assisted Baron von Steuben in drilling the troops. Later, the army pursued the British, who were evacuating Philadelphia, and fought them at the Battle of Monmouth on June 28, 1778. In the wake of the fighting, the army moved north to take up positions around New York. Over the next two years, Knox was sent north to help obtain supplies for the army and, in 1780, served on the court-martial of British spy Major John Andre. In late 1781, Washington withdrew the majority of the army from New York to attack General Lord Charles Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia. Knoxs guns played a key role in the siege that ensued. Following the victory, Knox was promoted to major general and assigned to command American forces at West Point. During this time, he formed the Society of the Cincinnati, a fraternal organization consisting of officers who had served in the war. At the wars conclusion in 1783, Knox led his troops into New York City to take possession from the departing British. Later Life On December 23, 1783, following Washingtons resignation, Knox became the senior officer of the Continental Army. He remained so until retiring in June 1784. Knoxs retirement proved short-lived, however, as he was soon appointed Secretary of War by the Continental Congress on March 8, 1785. A staunch supporter of the new Constitution, Knox  remained in his post until becoming Secretary of War as part of George Washingtons first cabinet in 1789. As secretary, he oversaw the creation of a permanent navy, a national militia, and coastal fortifications. Knox served as Secretary of War until January 2, 1795, when he resigned to care for his family and business interests. He died on October 25, 1806, of peritonitis, three days after accidentally swallowing a chicken bone.

Plea Bargaining - A Flaw in the Criminal Justice System in the United Essay

Plea Bargaining - A Flaw in the Criminal Justice System in the United States - Essay Example This paper will discuss plea bargaining as a flaw in the criminal justice system. Plea bargaining is defined as a process whereby a defendant in a criminal case and the prosecutor reach a conclusion (which is mutually satisfactory) to end the criminal case at hand, subject to approval by the court. Successful plea bargaining lead to a plea agreement between the defendant and the prosecutor, where the former agrees to be plead guilty to the offence without a trial (Robert and Stuntz 24). In return, the prosecutor consents to make favorable recommendations to the court or dismiss specific charges regarding the case. However, plea bargaining is considered as a flaw in the criminal justice system. Its critics argue that it is a shortcut to justice, and therefore the due process of the law may not be followed fully. Besides, it is considered as a flaw in the criminal justice system because it is deemed to be unfair to criminal defendants. This is because the prosecutors tend to have so mu ch power in deciding the charges that a defendant may face (Hessick and Saujani 197). Also, since the prosecutors are evaluated to a greater extent on their rates of conviction, plea bargaining may force them to try at all costs to win the case. conversely, plea bargaining is a flaw in the criminal justice system because it is likely to soften punishment’s deterrent effect a s the defendant has an opportunity to bargain for lesser punishments (Hessick, Andrew and Saujani 81-82). Origin and Impact of Plea Bargaining Plea bargaining is a critical part of the United States’ criminal justice system; actually, majority of the criminal cases in America are settled using this means instead by jury trial. Plea bargaining traces its origin to the case of Brady v. United States in 1970 when the defendant (Robert Brady) tried to alter his plea after he had agreed to plead guilty to kidnapping for a lesser sentence (Fisher 44). Brady’s move was motivated by the desire to av oid death penalty. However, upon hearing the case, the Supreme Court ruled that his plea was legitimate because had an option of refusing the offer by the prosecutor. Subsequent case also showed that the Supreme Court approved the legality of plea bargaining. In the case of Santobello v New York in 1971, the legality of plea bargaining was challenged when the prosecutor was accused by the defendant of breaching their plea agreement by recommending a punishment that was harsher than the one they had agreed upon. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the defendant; it argued that legal validity of plea bargaining to be achieved, the defendant and the prosecutor should adhere to the plea agreement’s terms. This case set a precedent that each plea bargaining must be approved by the court for it to be legally valid. Since then it has been entrenched in America’s criminal justice system (Bibas 2471). However, several studies have shown that it affects criminal justice system b y giving the prosecutor more discretion that may lead to unfairness on the part of the defendant and by granting the defendant lesser punishment. The following cases bring the flaw mentioned above: Bordenkircher v. Hayes where the court approved unfair handling of the case by the prosecutor; and in Marshall v. Barlow’s Inc where the defendant was granted lesser punishment despite the gravity

Analyzing Curse Of The Starving Class :: essays research papers

In class we learned about a man named Goethe. He developed a way to critique any category of art, whether it be a poem, oil painting, or a play. According to the World Book Encyclopedia, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German poet, novelist, and playwright. He ranks among the most important and influential writers of modern European literature. Goethe was also a leading thinker and scientist. The scope and originality of his literary works and the diversity of his intellectual pursuits make him the central figure of German classical and romantic literature. Goethe learned to discipline his passions and he developed a greater balance between emotion and reason.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Now that we have some background on Goethe, we can focus on his questions of analyzing art. These three questions are as follows: (1) What is the artist trying to do?, (2) How well does the artist do it?, and (3) Is it worth doing? The preceding questions could be answered in aim of the painter, actor, director, scene designer, make-up artist, and so on.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In analyzing â€Å"Curse of the Starving Classes† with Goethe’s questions, I will keep my focus on the playwright, Sam Shepard. His is a story that I don’t come across very often. I believe Mr. Shepard wrote this play to bring a variety into the theatre, as well as writing about something he knows and has lived through. Just the fact that this story is his life memory brings feeling and passion to the script. Perhaps I’m digging this too deep, but it is one thing to make up a story, and another to actually have been there. What is the artist trying to do? In my opinion, Shepard is sharing his past, as well as offer a lesson to be learned. This story could bring about different feelings; anywhere from appreciation of what one has to complete and utter boredom. Personally, it helped me realize that my family is important.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  On to the next question, How well does the artist do it? Shepard’s story has drama, with a little side of comedy. Although I feel that the play is a little depressing, my face didn’t show only one emotion. There are, indeed, a few humorous lines here and there in the script. The laughter and the drama make the play a well rounded story in my eyes.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The final question, Is it worth doing?

The Change in Relations between the U.S.A

One of the factors that caused the relationship between the USSR and the USA to change was the fact that the USA were Capitalists and the USSR ere Communists. This meant that they supported and believed different things. America wanted people to live a free life – earn as much money as they want, allow the public to vote freely for the Government they want – where as Stalin did not agree and thought that everyone should earn the same amount of money and that the public were only allowed to choose Communists for the Government. This put a big strain on their relationship because it meant that both sides wanted different things to happen in the world and it meant that they couldn't agree on the same things. Another factor which caused the frosty relationship between the two powers, was the Berlin Blockade which Stalin thought would make him more in control of the Eastern/ Soviet part of Berlin. Stalin feared that the Western allies were planning the permanent division of G ermany. The Western allies also began to develop a new policy such as new currency and a new German assembly which would develop a new constitution, which Stalin did not like. Stalin thought that by Blockading his part of Berlin, it would keep the Eastern part of Berlin separate and protected from the Western and that it would make him look more powerful. A third factor which caused the relationship to significantly change was the Truman Doctrine. The Truman Doctrine was a promise which President Truman had made to help any country which were threatened by Communism, by sending troops or economic resources such as money or military equipment. Truman feared that the Soviet Union would spread Communism so he thought that by making a promise, it would prevent Communism from spreading anywhere in the world. This could have put a strain on the USA and USSR's relationship as Stalin could have felt as if he was being threatened by the USA.The factor which is most important, significant and w as the causation for the relationship to change, was the fact that the USA were Capitalist and the Soviet Union were Communist. This is the most important factor because if it wasn't for both the USA and USSR to have different beliefs, then the Berlin Blockade and the Truman Doctrine may not have existed in the first place. It may also mean that there may not have been a historical event – such as the Cold War – if Capitalism and Communism did not exist. The Change in Relations between the U. S. The War on Drugs - 1646 Words

The enactment of the relevant UN Conventions in 1961, 1971 and 1988, and since then an international policy strategy of prevention and enforcement (commonly referred to as the ‘War on Drugs’) has attempted to achieve a ‘drug-free world’. Today, it is painfully clear that this goal has not been achieved; recreational drugs have become more potent, more diverse, cheaper and more readily available than was ever the case before prohibition began (Rolles, Murkin, Powell, Kushlick, Slater, 2012; Stockwell, Gruenewald, Toumbourou, Loxley, 2005; UNODC, 2013; Dan Werb et al., 2013). In parallel to this, the economic cost of the War on Drugs to all nations, including the cost of enforcement, the cost of the imprisonment of offenders, public health costs, loss of productivity and costs incurred as a result of associated organised crime activity and related minor crime has exponentially increased and continues to increase today (Baum, 1996). In contrast, the global illicit drug trade accounted for approximately 1% of total world trade in 2003, estimated at $321.6 billion (UNDCP, 2003). In the UK, the illicit drug trade generated as much as  £6.6 billion in 2007 (Matrix Knowledge Group, 2007). It was the summer of 2010 I had to visit Folly Beach, and then summer 2011 was Pensacola Beach, and next was Folly Beach again during summer 2012. Not only do both beaches clinch personal memories in my head, but both areas have something in common to pull your interest, as well as they differ such that you can be able to choose where to spend a†¦show more content†¦It’s important to note that the two areas have awesome attractive touristic site. When you visit these two areas, find time to tour the city’s bordering these towns and you will find interesting museums. Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon museum and Charleston City Market were my favorite in Charleston while the National Naval Aviation Museum was my favorite in Pensacola. These two cities are located in the South and both are in the upper 50% where the dominant religion is Baptist. Precipitations in these areas are in the top 70%. Additionally, both beaches have a huge play ground covered with sand closest to the water. Furthermore, these areas have beach houses for rent with the expensive houses closest to the beach, and summer is the best season of the year to visit these areas. Spirit Leader Free Essays

To many cheerleading may not be considered a sport, however what those many people may not understand, is that like all sports it requires the same key components to succeed. The cheerleaders that are serious about this sport understand that many elements are needed in making a â€Å"die-hard† cheerleader. I would say these elements are dedication, commitment, heart and soul. We will write a custom essay sample on Spirit Leader or any similar topic only for you Order Now It is with these concepts that separate who continues with their sport and who quits at the first sign of difficulty. I would like to be the â€Å"Spirit Leader† of our cheerleading team this season. One reason I’d make a great choice for this position, is that I would be dedicated to the team, and won’t give up when faced with an obstacle. To me, extra practicing, time spent making bows and signs, banners, or our spirit can, is not work, but a privilege. These tasks would not bother or frustrate me, as it would better all of us. I want to be apart of leading the team, and helping us all grow not only as individuals but as a family. Even though I’m fairly new at cheering, my enthusiasm and dedication is great, and would help toward making our team spirit soar this year. I remember as I walked into the first tryout day, last year, how nervous and inexperienced I was, and intimidated by the ones that â€Å"knew it all†. I believe my cheer skills have progressed over time. Even though I’m far from perfect, if I continue to learn and get better, it can help me better the team’s motivation and spirit this season. And bring spirit, love and motivation in leading the team and giving other girls someone to look up to. Being the spirit leader wouldn’t just be my job for the team, but the opportunity to inspire the girls with activities, challenges, and cheering together as a team. I would like to help keep our team connected, keep our cheerleader spirit alive, and have pride in our school. There’s always a time and place for fun, but being focused and keeping the big picture in mind is what is going to make us outshine the rest. We need to motivate our peers, keep the spirit flowing through the halls. Cheerleading isn’t just being a team, but a family. A Spirit Leader should have a positive attitude toward everything. Whether a stunt falls, or the music stops, I would be the motivating factor in keeping our team from falling apart. I need to show these girls spirit and motivate them in all aspects. If accepted to be the Spirit Leader of our team, I plan to execute the suggestions of our coach into making a spirit can, and a sign for the school of the weekly sport games. Also, I have ideas involving our â€Å"little sisters† for JV this year. As well as continuing to brain storm a list of other activities. I want to make this a phenomenal season full of spirit, laughter and love. To keep our school spirit up and running all season, I would like to try and get everyone involved; students, staff, faculty, athletes, families, and the community. To make the best of this year, we need to have support from majority of these people. Those are the people that look up to us, cheerleaders, to bring the spirit to school functions. As a Spirit Leader, I want to make a change in our school and community. That will take more dedication from everyone, especially myself, but I’m willing to do it. Cheerleading, to me, isn’t just about standing on sidelines yelling cheers, but about a group of people supporting another group through their spirit. It may not be about bows or matching outfits, either, but about how people can come together to achieve something great. Finally, it’s not just all about the ‘perfect‘ routine, but about all coming together and loving each other as a family. We can make a difference. I hope in your time reading this, I have helped you realize that I would be a great Spirit Leader for our cheerleading team. I am a team player, a motivator, and girl with lots of spirit! No matter what, we are a team and we’re all in this together. With my concentration, focus, dedication and time, I will help make our Chittenango Varsity Cheerleading team’s spirit shine, and bring our team together as one. Conflict essay free essay sample

Conflict is a force which causes issues between individuals and groups. This force can be seen in the novella â€Å"Animal Farm† by George Orwell and the picture book â€Å"The Rabbits† by John Marsden and Shaun Tan. Both of these texts convey conflict between forces using allegory. In the novella â€Å"Animal Farm† conflict is shown between man and animal. This force causes issues between Farmer Jones and the animals. This creates a rebellion, which is inspired by Old Major’s song â€Å"Beasts of England†. This song unites the animals and for them to desire a ‘golden future time’. When Jones is taken out of the picture, a common enemy is required and in this case it is Snowball. Napoleon feels that his leadership is threatened by Snowball and his ideas, for example the windmill. Napoleon sent out his vicious dogs and brought the expulsion of Snowball from the farm. George Orwell shows the consequences of conflict in â€Å"Animal Farm† by the corruption of power. We will write a custom essay sample on Conflict essay or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Power on the farm becomes corrupt soon after Snowball’s expulsion. All Seven Commandments are eventually changed, but the animals are persuaded to think that they forgot the commandments to prove that the pigs did nothing wrong, for example â€Å"no animal shall sleep in a bed† is changed to â€Å"no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets†. Another example of corruption of power in the novella â€Å"Animal Farm† is when the chickens admit to be working with Snowball. â€Å"Animal Farm†, the novella, shows the issues between the pigs and the rest of the animals. The pigs are very selfish characters and symbolise communist leaders. The pigs are the ones who change the commandments for their benefit, they misuse their power, and manipulate the other unintelligent animals to thinking that their ways are correct, for example the pigs steal all the milk and apples for their own good and tell the other animals that they need all the food because they are the ‘brainworkers’ of the farm. In the end, the pigs start acting like humans† and taking on all of man’s behaviour, walking on their hind legs, they change the commandment â€Å"Four legs good, two legs bad† to â€Å"four legs good, two legs BETTER† and also change â€Å"all animals are equal† to â€Å"all animals are equal, BUT some animals are more equal than others†. The pigs change these commandments because they were known to be greater than the other animals and the ones who have the authority. The picture book, â€Å"The Rabbits† written by John Marsden and drawn by Shaun Tan shows conflict between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people in relation to the ownership of the land, Australia. The rabbits who represent the British, invade the coast of Australia and the numbats who symbolise the Aboriginals in the area. Both cultures believed that they owned the land and the numbats didn’t know what was happening or who they were. â€Å"At first we didn’t know what to think. They looked a bit like us. There weren’t many of them. Some were friendly. † Shaun Tan and John Marsden create conflict within the cultures by the Rabbits invading the numbats territory. By looking at the pictures in detail you can see that the rabbits are larger in size and stronger than the numbats. This technique is used to show that the rabbits are more dominate compared to the numbats. When the Rabbits come there is confusion and anxiety from the numbats as their environment is destroyed by the invading culture. â€Å"They ate our grass; they chopped down our trees and scared away our friends†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Issues between groups or individuals are displayed in the texts â€Å"Animal Farm† the novella written by George Orwell and the picture book by Shaun Tan and John Marsden â€Å"The Rabbits†. An allegorical fable is used in both of these texts and techniques already talked about make these texts are a great representation of conflict.

The Shawshank Redemption Argumentative Essay Example For Students

The Shawshank Redemption Argumentative Essay The Shawshank RedemptionThe Shawshank Redemption is a very unique movie which involves manydifferent personalities and underlying themes. The personalities of the inmatesare very interesting and when they are combined they create a very fascinatingplot which looks at prison life in a interesting and different perspective thanone normally thinks. The main characters are Andy Dufrense (Tim Robbins) andEliss Red Redding (Morgan Freeman). These characters are well complimented bythe wise and simple old man, Brooks (James Whitmore), and the evil warden. Thepersonalities of the Shawshank prison combined to form a sort of community. Onenever really thinks of a prison as such, but it seems to hold true. This movieshowed a prison not only as a place where murderers and thieves live, but as acommunity of people who have had problems and may or may not be rehabilitating. We will write a custom essay on The Shawshank Redemption Argumentative specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now It seems that some prisoners go in and accept what they have done and try tomake something of an already disastrous life while others give up and reallydont care if they commit other crimes (inside and outside of the prison). Butin all reality, the prison was home for the inmates and they made it into whatit was. The demeanor of the characters creates a very unique atmosphere. The story revolves around Andy who is convicted of murdering his wifeand her lover in 1946 and is sentenced to life in prison. He is sent to theShawshank prison, the state prison in Maine which is known for its harshness. At the beginning of the movie, one does not know if Andy committed thehorrible crime of murder. But what is known is that he is not ready for prisonand honestly doesnt seem like a man who would survive. His thinking going in isjust to survive and blend in. He knows that sticking out would not be good forhim. Throughout the movie, Andy undergoes several changes in his personality. But overall, he seems like a wise man who will deal with what the justice systemhas served him. He is normal on the outside but seems full of emotion. Hisemotional side is best put by the 4/14/95 issue of the San Francisco Chroniclewhich reads, Dufrense, a soft-spoken banker with emotions bubbling under thesurface. Andy is a very complex character but one can see that he holds hisfeelings inside of him and tries not to let people know how he feels. Andys friendship with Red begins in a peculiar way because neither of themhave anything in common. Andy asks for a rock hammer which Red gets for him. Red,knowing that Andy is vulnerable, gets him on the tar duty and seems to take himunder his wing. The friendship is very unique and they both are very energeticwith emotion. Bill Dupre of the News and Observer writes of their emotiontogether, This is a graceful, quiet characterization, and Robbins scenes withFreeman are wrought with depth, delicacy, and precision. This is where the opportunistic side of Andy begins to be evident. Afteroverhearing the guards talking, he almost risks his life to tell the guard thathe will help him keep the $30,000 that he inherited. This shows that Andy hadguts and that he wanted to survive. In return for his favor of helping the guard,he gets his fellow workers ice cold beers on the last day. It is ironic becausehe has quit drinking himself. Andy then begins to work in the library becausethe warden hear s of his talents in finance. This is where Andy first meetsBrooks. He use this opportunity to ask the state for more money to build alarger library. And finally, the way Andy escapes is almost genius. Knowing thathe is on the good side of the warden, he devises a very interesting andsuccessful plan of escape. .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f , .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f .postImageUrl , .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f , .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f:hover , .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f:visited , .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f:active { border:0!important; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f:active , .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u6bca761e966b79e21206d5478911a40f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Fvgdf EssayOverall, Andy blends in with the prison community through the good timesand the bad (the sisters, a group of homosexual rapists). His personality is oneof a person who makes the most of what he has. But he never loses hope that hewill be free one day. Red is a very unique character in his own right. The prisons sole blackinmate, he is the man who smuggles contraband into the prison. He is also alifer and he says that he is the only man in the prison who is guilty. He hasaccepted his fate and is dealing with the prison as his life but still tries tomake his life on the inside the best he can. Red really doesnt think much aboutbeing paroled (he is rejected several times during the movie). He just takes oneday at a time. He is determined not to let the jail system get to him. Hisfriendship with Andy becomes stronger throughout the movie from when they firstmeet until Red joins Andy in Mexico. Red is a man who knows the rights andwrongs of the prison and it seems that Andy becomes his apprentice during themovie. Overall, Red is a subtle man who tries not to be noticed. His personalityis one of perseverance and he is ready to accept what the system may deal him. Talking about the warden is difficult just for the reason that he is acruel man who represents evil and unfairness in the movie. The reason the wardentakes a liking to Andy is because Andy is an accomplished accountant who canhelp him cheat the state. The opportunistic Andy takes advantage of this byreading the Bible (to impress the warden) and basically doing what he is told. This leads to the wardens demise (trusting Andy too much) and Andys escape. The personality of the warden does not change much throughout the movie. Even if he does something nice (letting Andy help fellow inmates), his solepurpose is to profit and be in charge. He shows off his power many times and inthe cruelest way. For example, his power and cruelty can be best seen when hediscovers that the young inmates testimony may free Andy. The wardens solutionis to kill the young inmate and get the matter out of the way. Losing Andy wouldbe devastating to him. The warden basically adds the bad guy dimension to themovie. The prison had people of all ages and backgrounds (non racial). Brooks is areal old timer who had been in the prison for a very long time. He exemplified aman who had just made prison his life and he was very content with his life. Henever foresaw leaving and knew this would be his life. He didnt expect anythingout of the ordinary to happen. He seems to be a lost soul not knowing what hewants or what is right for him. His death signified his confusion. The movie gives us a perspective of a prison not really shown before. Though the movie may seem unrealistic in some ways, it is very moving and makesone think deeper about who the inmates are and what they are really like. In the4/14/95 issue of the San Francisco Chronicle it reads, As preposterous as it isappealing, The Shawshank Redemption takes a straightforward, soul stirringnovel by Stephen King and turns it into a somber, bloated prison drama designedto pump you with inspiration. This inspiration is created by the actions andwords of various characters. It is actually an inspiration to the viewer toalways have hope and pursue your goals. Red said, Hope is dangerous on theinside. He was saying that having hope could drive a man crazy but in allreality he had hope in himself. This was untrue because Brooks death signifieda lack of hope. He really had no one and the inmates were his family. Leavingthe prison was devastating and he just thought nothing of life. Red was contradictory to his own words because he ended up surviving and succeeding all be causeof the hope that he had. .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 , .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 .postImageUrl , .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 , .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43:hover , .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43:visited , .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43:active { border:0!important; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43:active , .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43 .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u6732b013a08de9c9514baadb55fa4c43:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Ethnographic Film EssayThe personalities of the characters create an almost unreal setting whereyou see things you may not expect to see.
